At Advocate Health, the path to caring for others is often personal. For many of our teammates, the work they do each day is shaped by the moments and people who first inspired them to serve.
For Keely, that path began with her grandfather.
A calling shaped by family
Growing up, Keely watched her grandfather manage multiple heart conditions. His experience gave her an early understanding of how deeply heart disease affects not only the individual, but also the people who love them.
She remembers being in elementary school when he had one heart surgery, and then another when she was in high school. But during nursing school, her connection to cardiac care became even more personal.
While on a mountain vacation, Keely’s grandfather experienced a sudden cardiac event in a restaurant. In a matter of moments, everything changed. A restaurant employee quickly recognized what was happening and began CPR — a decision that saved his life.
For Keely and her family, that moment was life-changing. Because one person was prepared to act, her grandfather had more time. He was there for her wedding. He later got to meet her first child. Those moments became part of her family’s story because someone stepped forward when it mattered most.
More than clinical expertise
That experience continues to shape the way Keely shows up in her work today.
As a nurse, she brings both clinical skill and a deep sense of empathy to cardiac care. She understands that heart care is about more than treatment plans, procedures or technology. It’s also about trust, compassion and being ready in the moments that matter most.
Her grandfather’s story didn’t just influence her career path — it continues to guide how she cares for patients and families every day.
Sharing knowledge that can save a life
Today, alongside her clinical role, Keely also teaches Hands-Only CPR in the community.
Through that work, she helps others build the confidence and knowledge to respond in a cardiac emergency. She teaches with the hope that one day, someone in the room will be the person who steps forward — the person who helps give another family more time together.
That commitment reflects something powerful about the work we do across Advocate Health. We care for patients in the moment, and we also help strengthen the communities around us through education, partnership and prevention.
