Atrium Health Expands Community Impact Through Landmark Affordable Housing Partnership

At Advocate Health, we know health starts long before someone walks into a clinic, hospital or care site. It starts with the conditions that shape everyday life — including access to safe, affordable housing. That’s why we continue to invest in the strength and stability of the communities we serve.

Advancing affordable housing in Charlotte, NC

A new milestone in Charlotte reflects that commitment in action. Atrium Health recently finalized a land-swap agreement with INLIVIAN, Charlotte’s public housing authority, helping make new affordable housing development possible. Read more in the full newsroom announcement.

Through this agreement, Atrium Health, part of Advocate Health, contributed 14 acres off North Tryon Street to help enable affordable housing development in Charlotte. Atrium Health also exchanged a 3-acre property in Dilworth for a similarly valued parcel in Midtown, supporting new opportunities for affordable housing and future innovation in the region.

With the closing of this agreement, Atrium Health has now contributed more than $51 million toward affordable housing and homelessness solutions in the Charlotte region over the past five years — one of the largest total contributions by any locally based organization.

Why housing matters to health

This work matters because housing and health are deeply connected. When families have a safe place to call home, they’re better positioned to thrive. In the same way we care for patients and communities across the Southeast, we also invest in solutions that address the broader factors influencing well-being.

That commitment shows up in meaningful, measurable ways. At least 25% of the residential units developed on the North Tryon site must be reserved for affordable housing, and half of those units must be available to people earning 50% or less of the area median income. Atrium Health also worked with INLIVIAN to help ensure the Morehead Street property could support future affordable housing development.

When communities thrive, care does too

This milestone in Charlotte reflects how we work across the Southeast: by partnering locally, investing thoughtfully and addressing the conditions that shape health.

For people considering a future with us, this is one example of what it means to be part of Advocate Health. We don’t just talk about community impact — we build it through long-term partnerships, thoughtful investment and action that extends beyond our walls.
